In the German horror film “The Calendar Killer” (original title: Der Heimweg), a new serial killer terrorizes Berlin. He provides his victims with the murder date and a terrifying option: choose between their lover and themselves to be the one who perishes.
The film, which was directed by Adolfo J. Kolmerer, written by Sebastian Fitzek, and written by Susanne Schneider, features Luise Heyer as Klara, a married woman who is the Calendar Killer’s target. Martin (Friedrich Mücke), Klara’s violent spouse, gaslights her into thinking she is having hallucinations after the police reject her accusations. Jules (Sabin Tambrea), a volunteer, tries to aid Klara, who is alone after she contacts a helpline for women who travel alone at night.
As it keeps viewers wondering if Klara is indeed being stalked by a serial murderer or if her trauma from domestic abuse is making her envision everything, “The Calendar Killer” is tight and anxiety-inducing, creating genuine suspense. The hotline volunteer Jules, however, is given an excessive amount of screen time as he converses with Klara on her late-night drive home, which begs the issue of where the plot is headed. Many of the earlier sequences are called into doubt by the climactic events, even though they ultimately justify Jules’ presence. It is one of those movies that purposefully deceive audiences with well-crafted, highly dubious scenes.
As the distressed Klara, who is already drowning in a poor marriage, Luise Heyer keeps The Calendar Killer together to make her kid happy. For most of the one hour and thirty-seven-minute film, Jules’ character remains in the same flat, working on the helpline and helping Klara escape, although she consistently gets into deeper difficulty. You can’t stop wondering: what’s wrong with this Jules?
